Nicole's Story
My Second Home and Adopted Family .
- Nicole Hansen, 2009 Boys & Girls Club of Rochester Youth of the Year

The Boys & Girls Club means different things to different people; to me it is a second home, and my second adopted family. The first place I lived was not a home but a garage. I lived there with my brothers until I was seven years old. There were no beds, we had few clothes and we were often hungry.
I have lived many places since then and in 2006 was adopted into a family where I now live. A lot has changed for me in since then. I have a real home, real clothes, and plenty to eat. I also have two parents who love me and my brothers, and who make sure we have the things we need.
One of those things was the Club. Our parents signed us up almost as soon as we came to town because they knew it would be a safe place for us to go after school. There, we could do our homework, have a snack, and make friends. Soon, however, the Club became more than just a safe place: It became my second home, and my second adopted family.
Like a family, the staff and other members at the Club are always there for me. At the Club I can relax, and talk about my day. I trust the staff to listen, to care, and to give me sound advice. From their example, I have learned to be a better friend and listener as well.
Like a family, the Club makes me feel valued and trusted. I have responsibilities there that make me feel like I belong, and that give me confidence.
Like a family, the Club has helped me make friends, and fit in at my new school. I am more comfortable talking in class, and have the courage to become more involved.
Like a family, the Club has encouraged me to try new things and opened my eyes to new possibilities. As a result, I can plan for a career and envision a future that is bright and exciting.
Like a family, the Club has also taught me lessons that have prepared me for that future. Thanks to my experiences there, I understand the importance of helping others, and persevering through life’s obstacles—like bullies and algebra.
Like a family, the Club has been a tremendous force in my life. It has helped me—and my brothers—develop the skills we need to succeed, and acquire the habits and attitudes we need to become happy, productive adults.
